These are the questions people search for and ask us at the consultation, grouped the way they are asked. Where an answer depends on your symptoms, the free consultation is where the clinician settles it; call 0207 099 9659 or use the form below.
Does it work
Does the Emsella chair really help?
Yes, for most women with stress or mixed urinary incontinence in the published studies, and urge leaks improve too, more slowly. In the main published study of 75 women, symptom scores fell by about 64% three months after the course and 81% reported a significant reduction after the sixth session. We measure your own score before and after. The does it work page sets out the studies.
What is the downside of Emsella?
Three things to know. It is a course, not a single visit: six sessions over three weeks. In our experience the result holds for around six to twelve months, and a top-up session every six months or so tends to maintain it. And it does not fix an overactive bladder on its own, nor a prolapse. The clinician tells you at the free consultation which of these applies to you.
Does the Emsella chair fix a prolapse?
No. A prolapse is the bladder, womb or bowel pressing into the vagina because its support has stretched, and prolapse is not a cleared indication for the chair; one health-technology review excludes stage 3 or higher. If you notice a dragging feeling or a bulge, tell us when you book: the clinician assesses it at the free consultation and tells you whether the chair is right for your leaks or what to do next.
Does it work for an overactive bladder?
Partly. In the main study the urge-only group improved by 27% after the sixth session and 54% at three months, less than the stress group's 67%, and the chair does not fix an overactive bladder on its own. The urge incontinence page explains where it helps and when a urologist comes first.
Sessions and results
How many sessions do I need?
Six, twice a week over three weeks, 28 minutes each: the protocol used in the published studies and the one we follow. A single session shows you what it feels like, not what it does, and in our experience a top-up every six months or so tends to maintain the result.
How long do the results last?
Around six to twelve months in our experience, with a single top-up session every six months or so keeping the result. See how long results last.
How fast will I see results?
In our experience some people notice fewer leaks after one or two sessions; in the main study 81% reported a significant reduction after the sixth session, and the result kept building to three months.
Does Emsella hurt?
You feel strong tingling and the pelvic floor pulling and releasing, at an intensity the clinician sets to a level you can hold and brings down if you ask. The regulator's summary lists muscular pain and temporary spasm as possible side effects, and some people feel muscle fatigue afterwards, as after exercise.
Is there any downtime?
None. You sit fully clothed, nothing is inserted, and you go straight back to your day.
The NHS and cost
Is Emsella available on the NHS?
Not as part of the standard NHS pathway. The NHS pathway for urinary incontinence starts with pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and bladder training, and NICE has not assessed the Emsella chair. It is a private treatment, and the free consultation at our clinic is where the course and its price are set out in writing.
How much does the Emsella chair cost in London?
We price Emsella per session and per course, confirmed in writing at your free consultation, with a price match on any comparable written quote and finance available subject to status. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.
Can I buy an Emsella chair?
The chair is a professional device sold to clinics, not to the public, and BTL does not publish a price. A course at a clinic is the way to use it.
Consultations and follow-ups are free
Who it suits
Does Emsella work for men?
It is FDA-cleared in the US for urinary incontinence in women and men, and a 2025 study of 27 men treated after prostate surgery found symptom scores about 60% lower one month after the course, with no adverse events reported. The men's page covers it.
Can I have Emsella after a C-section, or after the menopause?
After a C-section, yes, from three months after the birth once you have healed. After the menopause, yes: in a 2024 randomised study of 50 postmenopausal women, adding the chair twice a week for 12 weeks to daily pelvic floor training improved pelvic floor strength and quality of life more than the training alone.
Can I have Emsella with a coil?
A copper coil is a common exclusion, because the magnetic field can act on metal. With a hormonal coil, bring the details to the free consultation and the clinician decides.
Who should not have Emsella?
Anyone with a pacemaker, a defibrillator or any electronic implant, metal implants in the pelvis including a hip replacement, a copper coil, in pregnancy or planning one, or the first three months after a birth, after pelvic or abdominal surgery that is still healing, with an untreated cancer, under 18, or with a prolapse at stage 3 or above. The clinician checks each at the free consultation.
What are the side effects?
The US regulator's summary lists muscular pain, temporary muscle spasm, temporary joint or tendon pain, a temporary increase in local circulation, increased sensitivity during intercourse and skin redness. The main study reported no treatment-related adverse events, only minor side effects such as muscle fatigue.
Is Emsella better than pelvic floor exercises?
It does what the exercises do, at an intensity and a rate you cannot reach on your own, and it reaches the whole muscle. Exercises done correctly and kept up for months work; in our experience many people find that hard, and they are who the chair suits, and exercises between sessions and after the course help it hold.
Booking and the clinic
Is the clinic doctor led?
Yes. The clinic is doctor led, and every session is run by a trained clinician on a genuine BTL Emsella chair. We are CQC registered, and our registration is held at our group's Harley Street address; every appointment is here at 8 Devonshire Place.
