EMSELLA

Emsella for an overactive bladder in London

An overactive bladder is the frequency, the urgency and the night-time trips that come from a bladder muscle that contracts when it should not. The honest answer first: the chair trains the pelvic floor, not the bladder muscle, so it does not fix an overactive bladder on its own, and neither BTL nor the US clearance names it. Where a weak pelvic floor adds leaking to the urgency, the chair helps with the leaking, and that is the use we offer. A course is six sessions of 28 minutes over three weeks at Emsella Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.

What the chair does for an overactive bladder

A stronger pelvic floor gives you more time to reach the toilet when the urge comes and closes the outlet more firmly, so the leaks that come with urgency reduce. In the main study the urge-only group's scores fell by 54% at three months. The frequency and the urgency themselves are treated with bladder training, fluid habits and medicines, and in our practice the chair is planned alongside those rather than instead of them.

The evidence

The urge-only group in the main study, 8 of 75 women, improved by 27% after the sixth session and 54% at three months. A sham-controlled trial of the chair for an overactive bladder is registered and still recruiting, with no results published, and we say so. The does it work page sets out every study.

When to see your GP first

A sudden onset, blood in the urine, pain, frequent infections, incomplete emptying or a neurological condition need a doctor's assessment first, because an overactive bladder has causes the chair does not touch. Overflow incontinence and a neurological bladder are not treated with the chair. The clinician asks about these at the free consultation and says if a referral comes first.

The course and booking

Six sessions, twice a week over three weeks, the score measured before, at the end and at the six-month review. Call Emsella Clinic on 0207 099 9659 or use the form below. The clinician tells you plainly how much of your problem is the floor and how much the bladder; the full Emsella guide covers the rest.
