Falling oestrogen after the menopause thins the tissues and weakens the pelvic floor, and leaking on a cough or with urgency often starts or worsens then. BTL names postmenopausal women among those the chair treats. A 2024 randomised study of 50 postmenopausal women added the chair twice a week for twelve weeks to daily pelvic floor training. Pelvic floor strength, sexual function and quality of life improved more than with the training alone; the study did not measure leaks. A course is six sessions of 28 minutes over three weeks, sitting fully clothed, at any adult age, at Emsella Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
Why the chair suits leaks after the menopause
The floor after the menopause is a muscle that has lost tone, and the chair trains it: HIFEM energy from the seat makes the whole pelvic floor contract thousands of times a session. The US clearance covers urinary incontinence in women and men by rehabilitating weak pelvic muscles and restoring neuromuscular control. The thinning of the vaginal tissue itself is a separate question, where vaginal oestrogen is the treatment NICE recommends, and the clinician says so at the free consultation.
What the studies measured
- 50 postmenopausal women, 2024, randomised: the chair twice a week for twelve weeks added to daily pelvic floor training improved strength, sexual function and quality of life more than the training alone; the study did not measure leaks.
- 75 women, 2019: scores about 64% lower at three months, the stress group by 67%.
The does it work page sets out every study, and the how long it lasts page what is known about holding the result.
Who should see a doctor first
Blood in the urine, pain, a sudden change in symptoms or frequent infections need your GP first. A bulge or a dragging feeling is assessed for prolapse at the free consultation, and a prolapse at stage 3 or above rules the chair out.
The course and booking
