Leaking on a sneeze or a run a year or ten years after a birth is common, and it is not something to put up with. The pelvic floor stretches in pregnancy and birth and does not always recover its tone, and BTL names postpartum women among those the chair treats. In a 2021 study of 95 women after childbirth, the 50 who had ten HIFEM sessions improved on a pelvic floor distress score by 52%, against 18% for the 25 on electrical stimulation. A course is six sessions of 28 minutes over three weeks, sitting fully clothed, from three months after a birth, at Emsella Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
Why the chair suits leaks after birth
The floor after a birth is a weakened muscle, and the chair trains it: HIFEM energy from the seat makes the whole pelvic floor contract thousands of times a session, at an intensity exercises alone cannot reach. The US clearance covers urinary incontinence in women and men by rehabilitating weak pelvic muscles and restoring neuromuscular control. We treat from three months after a birth, once you have healed, whether the birth was vaginal or a caesarean, and the first three months rule the chair out.
What the studies measured
- 95 women after childbirth, 2021: the 50 on ten HIFEM sessions improved by 52% on a pelvic floor distress score, against 18% for 25 on electrical stimulation; a companion paper measured the floor's electrical activity rising by 48 to 59%.
- 75 women, 2019: scores about 64% lower at three months, the stress group by 67%.
Pelvic floor exercises before and after the course help the result hold, and the clinician shows you how. The does it work page sets out every study.
Who should see a doctor first
A bulge or a dragging feeling is assessed for prolapse at the free consultation, which is common after birth, and a prolapse at stage 3 or above rules the chair out. Blood in the urine, pain or a sudden change in symptoms need your GP first.
